Rosie is an aspiring writer, and she spent some time working for Bloomsbury , where she did some reading of the slush pile to see what was good and what wasn't.

The Mad and the Bad

Her experiences with the slush pile are interesting; this is all the unsolicited manuscripts people send the publishing company, and it's vast. Some poor schmoe (in this case Rosie, generally called a Reader) will sift through it looking for gems. In the process, they get to see a lot of bad Writing .

Rosie tells me than in a few months of reading, she found two novels which might be worth extra work. Not good novels, hear me. Novels which might turn into something good given a decent amount of redrafting.

Everything else - the vast majority - seemed, to her, to split into two groups - the Crazies, and the Immature (my titles).

The Crazies write gibberish about their pet fanaticism. There are apparently a lot of crazies.

The Immature are people who really don't have enough experience to know how bad their work is. Rosie said she felt like there were a lot of sixteen year old kids submitting work - at least, that's how it read to her.

Although it was hard for her to put a figure on it, I got the impression that ~95% of unsolicited manuscripts are junk.

Which is good news for authors with a modicum of talent, if you think about it. Most people submitting work to publishers are either Crazy or Immature. If you're not (and you have some external proof that you're not) then you might be in with a chance.

Portfolios and Agents.

Rosie reckoned that most authors don't have many polished and ready short stories.

I think this makes each one important and valuable. It limits what the author can do to promote herself. I talked a little earlier about podcasting people's stories and I've got a response a couple of times that's interested me; "I don't have any to spare on this".

That makes me think; if authors had more stories to play with, more cards in their deck, so to speak, they could try out other methods of promotion. So when someone comes along and says 'Do you have something for this website?' or 'Can you submit something to the local paper?' then they can answer 'yes'.

A final, related point; Agents are the way to go for serious authors, and getting an agent relies on getting published in respected publications.

A Writer's Resource

Also, an idea emerged about making the Mindfire Software site into a writer's resource; rather than try to pimp Ariadne , it would serve as a hub for writers looking for good information on writing and publishing, and Ariadne would be offered as a potential tool to help with writing.

So, who's interested? Wanna get heard? It's a way to get published right now, and possibly heard by thousands of listeners. If we can get an iTunes slot (which shouldn't be hard at all) you'll probably get a hell of a lot of listeners for story.

I'm thinking the show would work like this;

Now, I've never podcasted before, but I've got the skillz to record it and publish it, if I can get the material. Who wants to be part of "Mindfire Storytime -- stories with a spark of genius" ;)

Which is the isolated plotline from before, but with images for each of the events. I think it shows how Ariadne is starting to become a really nice way to express your story.

Previously, Ariadne used a single canvas for your story; everything happened on the same page. But to manage complexity, I've added the ability to create a new canvas inside every event; so you can do things like this;

And then 'drill down' into the different blocks; this is act 1;

You can continue this to an infinite depth, going as far down as you want. That means you can have stories of arbitrary complexity, and simple pictures of each part of the story, all broken down into manageable chunks.

I'm rather happy with how it's going ;-)

A viewpoint is a view of a whole story from a particular character's point of view, or for a particular plotline, or similar. Here's an example.

Pulp fiction's a highly mixed-up film. It doesn't play out like a normal film. The characters enter and leave the story at different points, but underneath there's a sensible story. Here's a fraction of it in Ariadne;

Now - we can now examine a particular character's place in the story. For this post, I've chosen Harvey Keitel's charcter, Mr Wolf. By choosing Mr Wolf's viewpoint, Ariadne shows you this;

Now, I think this is going to be really useful to writers. Just playing round with it tonight, I figure it lets you see where your story is sensible; you get to make sure that, although your story may be complex and convoluted, each character has a sensible and simple path through the story. It also lets you design a view for each plotline you want, so that you don't have to design with the whole story on the page, but rather just the plotline you're interested in. For example;

One thing that strikes me is that, if I do it right, it might support all kinds of Writing . Particularly, it might support writing books as well as websites. So, imagine you're writing a novel or a textbook; wouldn't it be cool if you could publish it on the web and produce your manuscript at the same time?

Clearly, there's some closeness to Ariadne , which is another kind of writing system. At the moment the ideas feel seperated by a bit of a gulf, but not too wide a gulf. Maybe there's some kind of crossover, with Ariadne being a nice front-end to the whole thing.

I feel there must be some way to represent a whole body of knowledge; something that can be make into a book, or a website, or a series of novellas, or a thesis, or whatever. That you should be able to take that body of knowledge and see it in whatever format you like.

I'll have to think more on this one.

What I've been thinking about is website prototyping.

Here's the idea; most websites have common structures you see over and over. You're used to a homepage, and about eight 'primary' pages linked from every page, and a search box, and crumbtrail navigation, and all that. You're used to databasey bits like catalogue pages.

Basics

Now, what if there were languages that described site structure, in the way that HTML described page formatting? So you can create a site.map file which contains a structure like this;

That file gets used to create a set of eight pages, with all the navigation and crumbtrails in place. For content, you use files containing email text, which gets turned into valid html; have a look at Markdown for an example.

So if you see what's happening; the [intro] page defined in the site map now gets some content, and it's the kind of simple text you can copy and paste from email - so the people giving you content don't need to know web design at all.

So what I hope I'm showing is an outline for a system which could get websites up and running very, very quickly. A basic site, with just a site.map file and a few text files for content, could be up and running within ten minutes. People could be browsing it and checking it makes sense from very, very early on.

Data

All of this gets even more interesting (well, to web developers at least) when you throw in the idea of data. Creating a database for your website, like a mySql database, is basically a massive hassle. If you want to demo some data-backed pages to someone, it's basically a huge job for possibly little payoff. So this language would also include a way to define ad-hoc data, maybe like this;

So, very quickly, you've got site structure, content, and data. You could put together a simple site in a pretty short time.

Now, if the language was flexible enough, for certain sites this is probably all you're going to need. It'll work for a personal site with essays and comments, For larger sites, it forms a RAD tool which gets the larger structures specified.

RPC London defines addiction as "a situation in which a drug or stimulus has unreasonably come to control behaviour"; a definition, not in terms of substances or effects or withdrawl symptoms, but of the actions of the addict.

So I was wondering; if you get really enthused about new ideas, and pursue them to your detriment, could that be considered a form of addiction? Could intellectual curiousity be considered a relatively benign addiction, in the same way an addiction to exercise or to, oh, organic vegetables is benign?

It's tricky to do it like I am. I'm programming in the evening after a full day's work, huddled over my computer trying to squeeze out a little bit of improvement every so often. It's piecemeal.

Normally, you think of software coming in a slow heartbeat of releases - every six months another version pops out. Well, my development isn't really working like that. There's just me, releasing very intermittently but sometimes frequently. Last night I released a version for a single customer, for example.

I'd love to be able to pull a solid version of my software out at any time - not just something I'm hoping will work, but something I know will work.

So I've got to wondering how I can work with my situation. I think the best thing I could do is to start writing automatic tests for my code. (An automatic test is a quick piece of code you write to test a part of your code. Writing it takes some effort, but you can run it over and over again for free. If you've written a test for something, you never have to go back and test that thing by hand.) Problem is, writing tests for Ariadne is a nightmare. Tests are easy if what you're testing has a definate right or wrong anwer. Calculating the interest payment on a bank account, say - you're either right, or you're wrong. You can test it.

But so much of Ariadne is about prettiness and graphical results that it's hard to find a 'right test'. How do you make a computer test if the program is producing pretty diagrams? How do you test if the buttons look good?

Tricky. I'll be looking over the web for the answers to these questions...

I'm pleased to preview the new picture style Ariadne 'll be using in the forthcoming 1.1 release. You will be able to add color and images to the diagram, to create a visual storyboard.

Small business owners must find themselves in this situation all the time, and especially bootstrappers like me. We have no spare cash, so we can't hire people to do the things they're good at and we're not, like graphic design or marketing or sales.

Now, this can be pretty exciting, actually, because you get to try loads of stuff. It's on that great edge between exciting and stressful that I'd call ennervating; you're continually pushing your limits, and it's exciting and scary. Over the last year, I feel I've rounded out in my understanding of the world, and it's because of this constant pushing of the limits.

Problem is, I'm just not as good as a professional at so many things. Every man-day I put into a business plan is twenty minute's progress for a seasoned veteran. Every hour struggling with photoshop would be thirty seconds in the hands of a good designer.

Paired with a full-time job, that reduces my overall speed to a crawl. Maybe it's better to say Ariadne's speed, because I'm still rushing about like a mad thing. But if I had a team of half-a-dozen specialists, say, we'd get far more than a sixfold increase in speed.

My biggest skill, the thing that it's most valuable for me to be working on, is coding. It really is far and away the thing that no-one else could do. My quandry, then, is threefold.

1. how can I get more coding time by getting specialists involved, without giving away the whole company for lack of a few hundred quid,

2. how can I get more people into the coding team, and

3. how can I improve the velocity* of coding.

So far, I've been lucky on point (1). I've got a designer team eager to work for free, which is incredible, and a gang of people willing to help me out when the shit hits. And of course, Ivan will be helping me out. So it's not perfect yet, but it's gonna get better.

For point (2) - getting more people into the team - there's the technical problem of sharing the code itself with people in different places. I'm using licensed components, which basically means I've only paid to have one developer - which is me.

Point (3) might actually be my best best; maybe finding some way of automating my software testing to take some of the load off, maybe learning some time management skills so that my time is spent more effectively.

• velocity is a term from eXtreme Programming, a programming method. It's a note that on an ideal day, a developer can get a certain amount done. In a real day in a real job, inattention and phone calls and emails and blog entries mean they get a lot less than that done. velocity is the ratio of those two numbers; a typical velocity is 0.5

I've known Ivan for about a decade, and he's a fantastic guy. He's gregarious and enthusiastic and clever. It's a great combination, and we gel together well in thrashing out ideas.

So we talked about possible places to take Ariadne , and we came up with some really good stuff, I hope. Something we're talking about is making the whole program very customisable. What's getting us excited is the way we might be able to help lots of people out by customising the basic product really heavily. So we provide a basic narrative engine, with massive customisability.

The conversation also exposed a kind of tension in the business, between focusing on a single customer and focusing on generalities, and between seeking after money and seeking after satisfaction;

single or general?

If we focus on one customer specifically - like novelists, say, or English teachers - we can probably make them something totally great. But it's not going to be much use to people very close to that particular group - English teachers will have slightly different needs from history teachers, and we might be putting off history teachers when they see it's an 'English teacher's program'.

But on the other hand, the more general we go, the more we risk it being bland and tasteless. No-one needs a product that doesn't quite do anything right.

I'm not sure it's really a matter of finding a balance, but I think there is a balance between Writing huge plug-in architectures and getting something simple done. For those of you who haven't used plug-in software before, it's the concept of having mini-programs that only run as part of your larger program, or provide extra commands and features.

Ariadne's plug-in system will let you do quite a lot for such a small program. You will be able to create new menu commands, add your own types of reports, provide new templates, maybe add specialist wizards.

But I could extend it forever, and never really get to complete it. There's a real value in actually selling the thing and getting feedback, and a real danger that I over-customise and no-one ever writes any plug-ins or the system doesn't work right and basically all the effort is wasted.

money or satisfaction?

I'm writing Ariadne because I'm really interested in helping people with all these different ways of telling stories. A lot of my friends are writers, a lot more are role-players, and I'd like to be able to help people write their stories. But for most people, this is a hobby and they're probably not too interested in buying software. At least, it's not an essential. If they potter along with their writing, they'll be happy, even if they're not particularly efficient.

There's other people we could look at, too. Teachers are one of Ivan's good ideas. Here's people who have to plan out their lessons, and they're overworked. If a cheap bit of software makes their lives easier, there's a really good reason for them to buy, and if it really works for them, there's a reason for whole schools to start buying.

So there's potentially more money in schools than in garrets. But I really want to be helping my friends, and the kind of people who are like my friends, who want to get published but can't break through the inertia of their real lives to get their novel finished or their game written or whatever it is they want to do.

It's a conflict.

Fiction is clearly about narratives, but so are so many things humans do. We think in narratives all the time. A business plan is a kind of narrative. A lesson plan is a narrative. A case study is a narrative. A diary is a narrative. Jokes are narratives. Computer game plots are narratives. Family histories are narratives. Often, our own identities are narratives, descriptions of where we've been and what we've done.

The concept is so fundamental to the way we think sometimes that if we can pull together a model that lets people write their narratives exactly the way they want, we've got something that basically everyone deals with all the time but which there's no real support for.

The purpose of this post, then, is to suggest that we need to see the world in a certain way - filled with narratives, but narratives of different types.

The product, then, has to come in these two bits, a core that understands narrative in it's most general form, and specialisations and customisation and resources that help people tell the stories in the way they want, for the reasons they want.
